I go to a place to experience it, not to record it.

The marshes in their gold straw colour in summer. The same marshes, rare and beautiful, when covered in light-reflecting snow. The particular stillness of a valley in early morning. These are the things I carry back to the studio - not photographs to copy, but memories to paint from. Impressions of light and mood and the feeling of standing somewhere that mattered.

Landscape painting, for me, is an act of memory. The canvas is never the place - it is what the place left behind.
