Flowers are not the subject. Light falling on flowers is the subject.
The way it moves through a petal and makes it glow from within. The way it catches one bloom and leaves another in shadow. The way a bunch of garden flowers, lit from the side, becomes something entirely different from what you picked that morning.
I grow many of the flowers I paint. I know them before they reach the canvas - their weight, their fragility, the particular way they hold or diffuse light. That intimacy is in every painting.
