A first trip to Scotland

Ardlui sits at the northern tip of Loch Lomond, where the loch narrows and the mountains close in and Scotland begins to feel truly wild. The marina here is a quiet, beautiful place - boats moored on still water, the Highlands rising on every side, the kind of scene that stops you and makes you reach for a sketchbook. This painting was inspired by a first trip to Scotland with her husband - the beginning of what became a deep and lasting love for the Highlands and their landscapes.

There is something particularly tender about a painting made from a first experience of a place - the freshness of seeing it all for the first time, the heightened attention that comes with not yet knowing what to expect. Ardlui Marina holds all of that - the wonder of arrival, the beauty of the loch, and the beginning of a story that has taken the artist back to Scotland again and again. Painted in watercolour on archival paper, it captures the light on the water and the atmosphere of the Highlands with the luminosity this medium does so well.
