This painting was made on a walk around Oulton Broads at the turn from autumn to winter - the kind of day that is cold but deeply refreshing, when the air is clear and the landscape has that particular stripped-back beauty that only comes once the leaves have gone. The Carlton and Oulton Marshes are a major nature reserve, home to marsh harriers, otters, butterflies, and - very often - Muntjac deer roaming quietly through the reeds. A simply spectacular location, and one that rewards every visit.

A word of advice from the artist: some areas can get pretty muddy, so proper footwear is strongly recommended. Note to self.
