It was a long, cold morning walk. The wind was sharp, the sky heavy, and the waves were coming in strong - the kind that push right up towards the shore and make you step back. Gunton Beach sits just along the coast from Corton, equally quiet. Even on a day like this, with the cold biting and the sea in full voice, it was breathtaking.

This painting was made in the evening, back in the studio, while the memory of the sea was still fresh. The energy of those waves - the curl, the crash, the spray catching the silver light - is what I wanted to hold onto. There is something about a rough sea in early spring that feels more honest than a calm one. It does not perform. It simply is.
