Deep Water

There are moments when you stand at the edge of something and do not know whether to go forward or turn back. When the water is already around you, and the decision feels impossible, and the world beyond the shore is grey and very far away.

This painting was made in one of the darkest stretches - when hope was not yet visible, when the person loved most could barely move, could not remember the day, could not find her way back. The figure stands in deep water, her skirts spreading around her in slow ripples. She is not drowning. She is not saved. She is simply there, in the depth of it, holding still.

The water is cold and quiet. The trees on the far bank are barely there. And yet the light - faint, grey, diffuse - is still present. It has not left. It is simply waiting.

This painting does not ask you to feel better. It asks you to feel what you feel, fully and without apology. Grief this deep deserves to be witnessed. And sometimes, the most honest thing art can do is stand in the water beside you.
