Chepstow Castle
The full picture - castle, cliffs, and the River Wye from the other bank
The two companion paintings show Chepstow Castle up close - from the cliffs below, and from within the castle grounds themselves. This painting steps back across the River Wye and shows the whole scene at once: the castle in its entirety, the dramatic cliffs it stands upon, and the river below, all seen from the opposite bank in a view that reveals the true scale and grandeur of Britain's oldest stone fortress.
From this vantage point, everything comes together - the way the castle grows out of the rock, the sheer drop of the cliffs to the water, the sweep of the Wye as it curves through the Monmouthshire landscape. It is the view that makes you understand why the Normans chose this spot in 1067, and why it has commanded this stretch of river ever since. The largest of the three Chepstow watercolours, and the most complete.
