Not every painting begins with what the eye sees. This one began with a trip to the Lake District - the lakes, the fells, the particular quality of light on water that this part of England does unlike anywhere else - and then continued in the imagination. The New Island is a landscape that does not exist, but feels entirely as though it should. An island, newly discovered or newly formed, sitting in water that carries the memory of the Lakes without being bound by them.
It is the second of only two round paintings made to date, and like its companion That One Evening, the circular format is not incidental - it gives the imagined landscape a completeness, a self-contained world quality, as if you are looking through a porthole at something that exists just beyond the reach of maps. A painting for dreamers, for lovers of the Lake District, and for anyone who has ever looked at a landscape and imagined what might lie just beyond it.
