Pumpkins with The Copper Kettle
Warm metal, warm light, and the particular richness of an autumn still life
The copper kettle came from an antique shop - one of those finds that immediately suggests a painting. Set against a deep dark background with three pumpkins nestled beside it, it became the anchor of this composition: the warm metallic tones catching the light, the reflections on its surface telling their own quiet story.
This is the second in a series of three chiaroscuro pumpkin paintings made in the Suffolk studio last autumn - each one a different arrangement of the same subjects, each one exploring how a single light source transforms familiar objects into something worth looking at for a long time. The copper kettle appears here for the first time, adding a new warmth and weight to the composition.
