Warm metal, warm light, and the particular richness of an autumn still life

The copper kettle came from an antique shop - one of those finds that immediately suggests a painting. Set against a deep dark background with two pumpkins nestled beside it, it became the anchor of this composition: the warm metallic tones catching the light, the reflections on its surface telling their own quiet story.

This is the second in a series of three chiaroscuro pumpkin paintings made in the Suffolk studio last autumn - each one a different arrangement of the same subjects, each one exploring how a single light source transforms familiar objects into something worth looking at for a long time. The copper kettle appears here for the first time, adding a new warmth and weight to the composition.

Painted in the tradition of Caravaggio and Rembrandt, and developed following an online study with David A. Leffel, one of the foremost living painters in the classical realist tradition.
