This painting was made in the studio last autumn, when the season had fully arrived and the urge to paint it was impossible to resist.
It is the first in a series of three chiaroscuro pumpkin paintings, each a slightly different arrangement of the same subjects - an exploration of how light and composition can transform the same objects into something entirely new.
Autumns have a particular quality - the light changes, the colours deepen, and the studio fills with the kind of subjects that have been painted for centuries for very good reason.
