Three pumpkins on a shelf - and all the warmth of a Suffolk autumn

This painting was made in the studio last autumn, when the season had fully arrived and the urge to paint it was impossible to resist. Three pumpkins - one small and deeply orange, one striped and architectural, one somewhere between the two - arranged on a wooden shelf and lit by a single light source that rakes across their surfaces and reveals every ridge, every curve, every variation in colour.

It is the first in a series of three chiaroscuro pumpkin paintings, each a slightly different arrangement of the same subjects - an exploration of how light and composition can transform the same objects into something entirely new. Painted in the tradition of Caravaggio and Rembrandt, and developed following an online study with David A. Leffel, one of the foremost living painters in the classical realist tradition.

Suffolk autumns have a particular quality - the light changes, the colours deepen, and the studio fills with the kind of subjects that have been painted for centuries for very good reason.
