A new home, a new landscape, and the heat of a late summer
This is one of the first paintings made after a move to the East Coast of England - a landscape discovered fresh, seen with new eyes, and felt with all the heightened attention that comes with arriving somewhere for the first time. It depicts the marshes at Oulton Broad in late summer, when the grasses have sunburnt to gold and amber and the heat sits heavy over the water.
More than a landscape, it is a painting about a sensation - that distinct, warm, slightly smoky smell of sun-scorched grass on a still summer day. The kind of smell that stays with you. The kind of place that becomes part of you, quietly, before you even realise it.
