Five thousand years of history, and the Lake District fells behind it

Castlerigg Stone Circle is one of the oldest and most atmospheric prehistoric sites in Britain - a ring of ancient stones set on a natural plateau near Keswick, with the Lake District fells rising on every side. This painting places the stones in the foreground where they belong, solid and unhurried and utterly indifferent to the centuries, while behind them the mountains rise snow-capped against a light, airy sky of soft clouds and open space.

It is a painting of two kinds of grandeur - the human and the geological, the ancient and the eternal - and the contrast between the stones below and the mountains above gives the composition a quiet power that is hard to put into words and immediately felt. Inspired by a trip to the Lake District, and painted in watercolour on archival cotton paper, it captures the particular luminosity of a bright Cumbrian day with the lightness this medium does so beautifully. Presented in a white bevelled edge frame, it arrives ready to hang.
