During my last exhibition at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, I met a fabulous artist whose art form and techniques I believe more people should experience. I admire artists who strive to preserve traditions and history.
Initially unfamiliar with Mohammadhadi Ghahramanpouri (who graciously asked us to call him Hadi—phew, his full name was a mouthful! :)), he provided me and the audience with a great introduction to himself, his inspirations, and his work.
Because I speak the language of painting, it will be easier for me to describe his artwork in those terms.
Mohammadhadi transforms metal to be his canvas, he injects it with stories, memories, and his heritage. He explains that his craft, known as Ghalamzani (Persian metal engraving), carries the soul of a rare art form, one that he is determined not only to preserve but to revive for the world to see.
His engravings are not only inspired by history but also by the brushstrokes of the very well known Persian oil painter, Master Mahmoud Farshchian whose paintings are hosted by several museums and global exhibitions. Mohammadhadi revives Farshchian's miniatures through metal. Each piece becomes a tribute—not only to Farshchian’s timeless vision but to the seamless union of painting and craftsmanship.
Though oil painting and metal engraving may seem like distant worlds, they share the same heart: a devotion to detail, emotion, timelessness and storytelling.
Ghahramanpouri’s work transforms canvas art through hammered lines and polished curves. Although Mohammadhadi is currently transforming existing paintings into metal engravings, I'm really looking forward to his future creations and who they will inspire to sustain these traditions.
In his own words:
"In a time when so many traditional arts are fading, I'm relentless in the efforts to remind the world that these crafts can do more than survive—they can inspire, evolve, and shine anew. My passion for teaching and sharing Ghalamzani in the UK and beyond is not just about safeguarding a technique; it is about breathing life into a legacy and ensuring that Persian artistry continues to influence and enchant the world."
Some examples Hadi has kindly provided for me to share with you !
